Chapter 11
Gaston and I stationed ourselves in the corridor next to the front door of Agnes’s condo while we waited for the police to arrive. First on the scene were the two cops who arrested me at Elias’s place. They gave me a suspicious look and one of them moved toward me, obviously thinking I had broken into another dwelling and that Gaston had apprehended me.
‘Il est avec moi,’ Gaston said waving him off.
He had a conference with the cops in low tones that I could barely hear. The result of it was that they entered the apartment and stayed just inside the door. Gaston was satisfied that the crime scene was secure and he told me that we would wait for the rest of the reinforcements in the lobby. It wasn’t long before Constable Bouchard and her forensics team arrived and Gaston spent a couple of minutes bringing them up to date.
My fist was still closed around the keys that I had taken and Gaston had noticed.
‘Something in your hand, Sam?’ he asked with a fake innocence that I understood to be very real suspicion.
I knew I was busted so I didn’t try to come up with some story that he wouldn’t have believed anyway. I opened my hand and extended it, like a schoolboy caught stealing candies.
Gaston was quiet for a moment or so, a very long moment during which he stared at me with undisguised anger.
‘Tabarnac, Sam. What the fuck are those?’
‘Agnes’s keys,’ I responded lamely.
‘And where did you find them?’
‘They were in a bowl by the door. I thought you would want to search her car while we waited for the crew to finish with the apartment.’
‘Sometimes I wonder about you, Sam.’ Gaston added exasperation to his anger. ‘You know you can’t remove evidence from a crime scene!’
‘Yeah, I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking.’ I dangled the keys and let them drop a fraction of a second before Gaston’s hand shot out to grab them. ‘But you have the right to take them, don’t you?’
‘Not until their location is photographed and a note is made in the forensic log book that I took them.’
Gaston didn’t say anything for a couple of minutes, and then he stood up and said, ‘Stay right here. I’ll be back in a minute.’ He turned and walked back to the elevator and I could see from the numerals on the metal band above the door that he had returned to Agnes’s condo.
I ran over the possibilities of what could happen next and realised that one of them was that I would be arrested for tampering with evidence.
My stomach felt immediately queasy and I desperately searched for a bathroom. I willed my stomach back to normal and about five minutes later Gaston returned with Constable Bouchard. I worried that my fearful imagining was about to come true.
Luckily for me this proved not to be the case.
‘Constable Bouchard and I are going to take a look at Ms Baker’s car, if you’d like to
